Sister VanderHoeven is wonderful! We have laughed non-stop for a week.... no worries we have still gotten things done but it was been a whirlwind of adventure.
This week in Edmonds was wonderful! We started the transfer off well. We have set some goals for this transfer that we are pretty excited about. We are going to:
1. get to know everyone in the ward... Active and Less active
2. Work with the youth (we have 4-5 young women preparing to serve missions)
3. Have a lot of member involvement with lessons.
4. continue focusing on Part member Families
We are excited about our goals. We have worked with the young womens leaders and our Bishop and we are using out talents to help the youth. Sister VanderHoeven and I both like fashion and making things modest and the young women have asked to learn how to be cute AND modest... so we are going to do some activities with the girls to help them understand why modesty is important, and help them feel like beautiful daughters of God. We are planning to take them to a thrift store and show them how you can make anything cute and work:) We are also planning to help get the girls excited to serve missions because basically they are wonderful!
We are working with the Edmonds ward and the Edmonds Lutheran church that is in the area to build an inner-faith connection. We are planning to do a service project with the Lutheran church youth and our youth. We already help serve a meal to the hungry on Wednesdays, we are planning to make kits or do a clothes drive, or something of that nature... not exactly sure what yet... :) But It will be wonderful!
So I got sick again this week.... ha ha surprising... no but this time it wasn't my kidneys... I had a sore throat.... no big deal expect then I got white spots on my tonsils.... so the mission nurse had me go to urgent care just to be sure I didn't have strep and wasn't contagious.... I didn't (THANK GOODNESS) instead I have an ear infection... ha ha my ear has not hurt at all... crazy but apparently it worked. I have been on antibiotics for three days and I feel like a peach! :)
We have a Korean couple that we are meeting with that are progressing very well. They do not want to meet with Korean missionaries yet as they want to learn English, but they did express a desire to meet our mission President and his wife sometime! Booyah!. They are from North Korea and they have such a desire to follow Christ. They have been looking for a good church to go to and they are warming up to the idea of joining us! They have had some tough experiences in Korea where the church is capitolistic and all money goes to helping the pastors have a lifestyle like a king.... This has really hurt their hearts so they are excited to come to church in America.... They are so sweet! The woman loves to feed us.... well there is a bit of a language barrier... on Sunday she gave us thee egg, onion, celery, crepe type things but they were Korean crepes... they were delicious... Her apartment smelled like yeast though so we kept expecting bread or something... Then she brought us this meat that was 95% fat and had us eat it.... BLEH! I did though no worries.... but then we ask her how she seasoned it... and she shows us a GIANT bottle of wine....hahahaha hence the nasty smell.... I know the Alcohol cooked out but still! Then she had us eat these apple things that turned out to be a Korean date... (so in their culture turning down food is a big no no... so we put a smile on and ate everything... ) We asked her what the apple like things were... and she told us "Sleep aid" what?!?!?! In Korea you give these dates to people to help them sleep.... We had eaten about 10 at this point... and it was 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday (our busiest day of the week) Thankfully we did not fall asleep ha ha
I. GOT. PEED. ON. BY. A. CAT... yup.... We went to a members house this week and I tried to say goodbye to their cat... big mistake.... I picked it up and all the sudden I was soaking wet.... and I STUNK.... best part.... earlier that day Sister VanderHoeven got pooped on her from another cat.... that was not a good day for us ha ha But thanks to us being in a first world mission we were able to run home and clean up in no time. Hallelujah!
I showed Sister V the beach and she about died. She has been in-land her whole mission and was SO happy to see the ocean :) She kept saying "can you smell it!!!! THE OCEEAAANNN!!!!!" That made her day! Ha ha
Like I said... oh so much fun...
So that is just a little snip-it of my first week with Sister V.:)
This week... we are going to a dutch oven cook off, serving food to the homeless, teaching English, Teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and throwing a surprise party for one of the girls that went to camp :) She is turning 15 and her Best friend (the other girl that went to camp) moved to Indiana on Thursday... and didn't say goodbye... so she could use some cheering up... ya....
This week went well and we are excited to work with the youth this upcoming week.
